Seaweed Foraging Walk

Salish Sea intertidal · ID · ethical harvest · take-home recipes

$65

/ adult$20 / child 5-15

Driftline rate: pick $45 or $25 per adult, and $10 or free for kids under 16, right at checkout. Honor system — no forms, no questions, no proof.

1.5 hours in the intertidal zone — seaweed history & identification, mindful ethical harvesting, and at-home processing for food and daily self-care. The Salish Sea is a generous, ever-shifting place. Over 20,000 species of algae grow worldwide; the cold, nutrient-rich water around Camano grows some of the most flavorful and nourishing — gram for gram more nutrient-dense than most terrestrial plants. We'll walk a low-tide window together, learning to identify and sustainably harvest local favorites: sugar kelp, sea lettuce, nori, rockweed, dulse — and if we're lucky, a tucked-away find with a flavor closer to truffle than vegetable. Along the way I'll point out the marine life we cross paths with — octopus, harbor seals, river otters, sculpin, crab — and share how I bring each species home: rinsing, drying, broths, salts, salves, and the small rituals that turn a walk in the rocks into a week of meals. Children 5-12 are $20 each (add a child ticket at checkout). Under 5 are free.

Included

  • · ID guidance for all species we encounter
  • · Harvesting tools to borrow
  • · At-home processing & recipe handout
  • · Sample tastings on the beach

What to bring

Waterproof boots, water shoes, or Native Shoes Jefferson (made from algae; no flip-flops)Layers (Salish weather shifts fast)A small basket or mesh bagReusable water bottleSun or rain protection for the dayState harvest license if 15+ ($16/year, easy online — link sent with confirmation)
Weather: It is unsafe to harvest seaweed within 72 hours of a major rain event. A scheduled walk may be cancelled for that reason — if so, you'll receive a link to reschedule or to convert to a gift credit you can use whenever you're ready.
Accessibility: This experience is not ADA accessible. Guests need to walk uneven trails and maneuver on rocks and cobble in the tide pools. Sturdy waterproof boots required.

Private Foraging Circle

Up to 6 guests · 2-2.5 hours · seaweed broth on the beach

$500

flat / group$20 / child 5-15

An intimate 2-2.5 hour walk for your circle of up to six. Slower pace, more story, more time to taste. We meet at the location you've chosen from the curated list (or one I'll suggest based on the tide and weather that day). You'll learn species ID and ethical harvest at the rhythm your group wants, gather a small basket of the day's best, and finish on the beach with a warm pot of seaweed broth I bring along — made with kelp, miso, and the day's harvest. Good for birthdays, anniversaries, retreats, family weekends, and small groups who want the unhurried version. Children 5-12 are $20 each; under 5 are free.

Included

  • · Choice of curated location
  • · All ID guidance & tools
  • · Seaweed broth & tasting on the beach
  • · At-home processing & recipe handout
  • · Photos from the day if you want them

What to bring

Waterproof boots, water shoes, or Native Shoes Jefferson (made from algae; no flip-flops)Warm layers + rain shellA small basket or mesh bag (or I can bring extras)Reusable water bottleState harvest licenses for adults 15+ (link sent with confirmation)
Weather: Same 72-hour rule applies — if a major rain event lands inside the window, we'll reschedule. Private circles also reschedule for storm-front weather even if the rule technically allows the date.
Accessibility: Most curated locations involve uneven terrain. Cama Beach State Park is the most accessible option — request it specifically and we'll plan a gentler walk.

Ledgewood Full Moon Foraging Walk

Full moon, moonlight, and a deep evening minus tide

$65

/ adult$20 / child 5-15

Driftline rate: pick $45 or $25 per adult, and $10 or free for kids under 16, right at checkout. Honor system — no forms, no questions, no proof.

A moonlight shoreline walk with Jules Marsh on Tuesday, November 24, at 10 p.m. PST, before Thanksgiving. Explore seaweed identification and responsible foraging practices during a deep negative-tide window. NOAA predicts a low of about -3.47 ft MLLW at 10:15 p.m. PST at nearby Bush Point; this is a regional reference, not a Ledgewood-specific measurement. Moonlight depends on cloud cover. Limited to 10 adults and 4 children. Please carpool whenever possible.

Included

  • · Guided nighttime seaweed identification
  • · Responsible foraging education
  • · A safety briefing before beach access

What to bring

A working headlamp for every guest, plus spare batteriesA backup flashlight; a phone light is not enoughWaterproof boots with tractionWarm layers, rain protection, a hat, and glovesWater; keep hands free on the stairsCarpool whenever possible to minimize cars at the small parking area
Weather: I will cancel if bad weather, heavy cloud cover, or darkness makes the walk unsafe. If I cancel for safety, your paid booking becomes credit toward a future tour, not a cash refund, except where a refund is required by law. Do not travel until you have checked the latest confirmation. Headlamps are required even under a full moon.
Accessibility: The beach access described by Jules has stairs and a small parking area. Expect wet stairs, uneven beach terrain, darkness, cold, and slippery seaweed. This route is not step-free. Stay with the group and follow turnaround instructions.

[Sliding scale, built into checkout]

Driftline Rate

I keep a permanent sliding scale on every tour for low-income founders, disabled-led businesses, mutual-aid groups, and BIPOC/Indigenous/queer/ trans-led work — typically 40–60% off the listed range, sometimes more. No proof required, no forms, no questions. Anything you can buy on this site has the Driftline rate built right into checkout — tours, downloads, and session deposits all show the reduced amounts as selectable options when you pay. For larger project work, just ask and I'll quote at the Driftline rate.

Daytime photos and footage from Ledgewood. Headlamps are required for the moonlight walk.
Meeting point & parking: Meet at the small parking area above the beach stairs. Please carpool and bring a working headlamp for every guest.
Accessibility: Stairs down to the beach; uneven, slippery rocks in low light. Headlamps required.
Heads up: Nighttime visibility, wet stairs, slippery seaweed, uneven footing, cold exposure, and a rising tide. Headlamps and backup lights required.
Tasting & harvest: no license needed to come look and learn. Observation and identification only unless Jules confirms current collection permission and safety on the day. This walk is observation-only: no cutting, no collecting, no tasting from this beach. Any tasting comes from seaweed I harvested legally, in season, from a classified beach, and prepared at home.

Weather and cancellation: I will cancel if bad weather, heavy cloud cover, or darkness makes the walk unsafe. If I cancel for safety, your paid booking becomes credit toward a future tour, not a cash refund, except where a refund is required by law. Do not travel until you have checked the latest confirmation. Headlamps are required even under a full moon.

This walk runs with a minimum of 2 guests. If we're under by the day before, you'll get an email with options to bring a friend, pick a new date, or convert your deposit to a gift credit.

[Driftline rate · pick what works]

Every walk carries a sliding scale. Pick the rate you can pay — it's an honor system, I don't ask questions and nothing is flagged on your booking. Paying standard is what keeps the reduced rates open for someone else.

Per adult

+ Add a phone number or notes (optional)

Each additional adult must sign their own waiver before joining the walk. I cannot sign away another adult’s rights.

Read the full waiver
Brackish & Co. Ledgewood Moonlight Walk: Risk Acknowledgment and Waiver Please read before signing. The signer must be 18 or older. This acknowledgment applies to the signer and any minor children for whom the signer is the parent or legal guardian. Each additional adult must provide their own signed acknowledgment before participating. Nighttime intertidal walking involves limited visibility, wet and slippery stairs, uneven rocks, sharp shells and barnacles, waves, driftwood, rising tides, cold water, weather exposure, and delayed emergency access. Falls, injury, illness, property loss, and drowning are possible. Full moonlight does not guarantee visibility or safety. I will bring a working headlamp for each participant in my care, spare batteries, a backup light, traction footwear, and warm waterproof layers. I will stay with the guide, supervise children continuously, keep clear of the water and unstable rocks, and follow all safety, turnaround, and evacuation instructions. I will tell Jules privately about relevant access needs, medical concerns, and allergies before the walk. I will not participate while impaired. I may stop participating if I feel unsafe and will tell the guide before leaving. This walk is observation-only. No cutting, collecting, or eating wild foods is included. I will not assume that any plant, seaweed, or shellfish is safe to eat or legal to harvest. I understand the risks described above and voluntarily choose to participate. To the extent allowed by applicable law, I release Jules Marsh and Brackish & Co. from claims arising from ordinary negligence related to my participation. This does not waive liability for gross negligence, reckless or intentional misconduct, or any rights that cannot legally be waived. A parent or guardian's signature does not waive a child's rights where the law prohibits that waiver. Jules may stop or cancel the walk if weather, clouds, darkness, tides, or other conditions are unsafe. If Jules cancels for safety, paid bookings receive credit toward a future tour rather than a cash refund, except where a refund is required by law. Headlamps are required even under a full moon. By checking the acknowledgment and typing my full name, I intend to sign electronically. I confirm I have read this wording, had an opportunity to ask questions, and am signing for myself and only those minor children for whom I am the parent or legal guardian. This is not permission to sign for another adult.
